AVRO Lancaster Bomber – 03/01/1945
AVRO Lancaster bomber NF908 (Royal Australian air force) 467 squadron RAAF was on a fighter affiliation exercise from RAF Waddington when in poor weather crashed into the area of the Roaches killing all 7 crew on board.
Start point – Layby next to the entrance to Roaches Hall (ST13 8UB). Please see map below or view Google Map.
Meeting time – 0900 and depart for the trek at 0930, this will give late arrivals time to prepare. I will then conduct a head check, safety brief, weather update, route description and answer any questions.
Finish point – As start point.
Ground in general – Follow country lane that can be busy at times for 250 meters then head up on to the Roaches which are well used paths with crags close by that is popular with climbers then onto open moorland.
Duration – Up to 2 hours
Distance – 3.2 miles.
Trek grade – Easy with well used tracks up on to Roaches ridge with commanding views over Cheshire, Staffordshire and Derbyshire.
