Republic P47 Thunderbolt (USAAF) – 25/04/1943
Republic P47C Thunderbolt, 41-6227, 63rd Fighter Squadron/56th Fighter group USAAF was on a ferry flight from Speke when the aircraft hit severe turbulence resulting in the pilot losing control and bailing out sustaining injuries but survived.
Airspeed Oxford (RAF) – 28/12/1945
Airspeed Oxford HN594, 21 (P) AFU, RAF was on a map reading exercise when the aircraft encountered poor weather conditions slamming into the area of Kinder Scout but luckily the 3 crew survived.
Handley Page Hampden (RAF) – 21/01/1942
Handley Page Hampden, AE381/ VN-J, 50 Squadron, RAF was on a night cross country navigation flight from RAF Skellingthorpe near Lincoln when the crew became lost and crashed into the area of Kinder Scout resulting in the death of the 4 crew.
NA Harvard (RAF) – 14/01/1952
North American Harvard, FT415, 22 FTS (Flight training school) RAF was on a training flight from RAF Syerston near Newark when he crashed into the area of Kinder Scout killing the pilot instantly. It was believed he was 60 miles off course.
AVRO Anson (RAF) – 23/11/1945
AVRO Anson NL185, BCCF (Bomber Command Communication Flight) RAF was on a ferry flight when the pilot became lost in poor weather crashing into the area of Kinder Scout.
Start point – Lay by near Rushup Edge farm (SK23 0QT). Please see map below or view Google Map.
Meeting time – 0900 and depart for the trek at 0930, this will give late arrivals time to prepare. I will then conduct a head check, safety brief, weather update and route description then answer any questions.
Finish point – Same as the start point.
Ground in general – From the car parking area we walk up towards open moorland along a bridle then onto the area of Kinder Scout
Duration – up to 7 hours
Distance – 9.5 miles.
Trek grade – Moderate going along open moorland and well-used paths wreck 4 and 5 drop down a gentle gradient before a climb back up towards the main path.
Points to note:
- A route description will be given after we have visited each wreck site and we will have plenty of opportunities for a break.
- The weather on Kinder Scout can change at any time so please be prepared for this.
- One of the wrecks on this trek would have been visited if you were on a taster wreck to the P47 Thunderbolt.
