Handley Page Halifax (RAF) – 05/10/1943
Handley Page Halifax, HR727, 51 Squadron, RAF was returning from a raid over Hamburg when it was attacked by a Luftwaffe night fighter resulting in damage to the aircraft. The aircraft was trying to locate its base when it crashed into the area of Kinder scout with the loss of 5 crew. 2 of the crew survived.
Vickers Wellington (RAF) – 31/07/1941
Vickers Wellington, W5719, 150 Squadron, RAF was returning from a raid over Cologne when it overshot its base in South Yorkshire and crashed into the area of Kinder Scout resulting in 5 crew been killed and 1 survived.
Vickers Wellington (RCAF) – 26/01/1943
Vickers Wellington, X3348/ZL/Z, 427 Squadron, RCAF was returning from a raid over the French port of Lorient when it overshot its base near Durham resulting in a crash into kinder scout. All crew survived. The crosses are for 2 of the crew members who were later killed on other sorties.
Handley Page Heyford (RAF) – 22/07/1937
Handley Page Heyford, K6875, 166 Squadron, RAF was on a night cross country exercise from RAF Leconfield in East Yorkshire when it crashed into the area of Kinder Scout resulting in the 6 crew members been killed. It was believed they were 13 miles off course.
Start point – Edale main car park (S33 7ZQ). The main car park is next to the junction that goes into Edale village, car parking fees apply £6.00 for 10 hours. Please see map below or view Google Map.
Meeting time – 0900 and depart for the trek at 0930, this will give late arrivals time to prepare. I will then conduct a head check, safety brief, weather update and route description then answer any questions.
Finish point – Same as the start point.
Ground in general – From the car parking area we head through the stunning village of Edale and walk past the start point to the Pennine way, steep climb up to the first wreck then we stay on the plateau for all the other wreck sites.
Duration – up to 7 hours
Distance – 7 miles.
Trek grade – Challenging up to the plateau then easy going to see the wrecks however 1 wreck is on steep ground so caution is required.
Points to note:
- A route description will be given after we have visited each wreck site and we will have plenty of opportunities for a break.
- The weather on Kinder Scout can change at any time so please be prepared for this.
